De poppetjes – Daniel Negreanu, Tony G en Andrew Robl – zijn aan het dansen geslagen naar aanleiding van een aflevering van de PokerStars highstakes cashgame show The Big Game. Tony G. en Negreanu bashten Robl omdat hij niet straddelt en volgens de twee steeds veel te lang nadenkt. Robl gooide in zijn blog een flinke kluit modder terug, waarna er afgelopen nacht een ‘vredestelefoontje’ door Negreanu aan te pas moest komen.
De aanleiding
Negreanu en Tony G lieten zich ook al uit over de kwestie. Daniel op 2+2, terwijl Tony G zijn blog op Part[Po]ker gebruikte om de rel toe te lichten. Wat is er nou precies gebeurd? In een aflevering van de Big Game neemt Andrew Robl wat meer tijd dan nodig, naar de zin van Tony G. Die schiet uit zijn vel, vraagt om de ‘klok’ en maakt Robl voor van alles en nog wat uit, waaronder ‘fucking nit’. Vervolgens ontploft Tony nog een keer als hij zelf een hand speelt tegen Robl. Afijn, kijkt u zelf maar naar de aanleiding voor de rel.
Tel daarbij op deze bash van Negreanu tegen Robl, die weigert om te straddelen*en een relletje is geboren.
Negreanu valt Robl aan
Al voor de pas zeer recent uitgezonden aflevering, bood Negreanu volgens Robl (die zijn blog gisteren online zette) zijn excuses aan: “I saw him and talked to him recently at WSOP Europe – and he apologized for what he said on the Big Game and said he wasn’t attacking me and it wasn’t personal. Then he goes on 2+2 and basically attacks me (at least this is how I feel).”
Eergisteren postte Negreanu inderdaad (via de poster Isitdur?) een bericht op het forum. Daar zegt hij onder meer: “Tony called the clock on him not based solely on how long he took on that particular hand, but Robl’s habitual abuse of the amount of time he takes on every hand. The players on The Big Game are PAID $1250 an hour to appear on the show. Robl did absolutely nothing to add to the show, in fact, he burned up production dollars.”
Heldere taal van Negreanu, die duidelijk niet gediend was van de ‘tijdverspillende’ Robl. Ook de weigering om te straddelen, schoot de Team PokerStars Pro in het verkeerde keelgat. Hij noemt deze beslissing van Robl simpelweg verkeerd. “EVERYONE else in the game was willing to create some more action by making a -EV move in the best interest of creating action.”
“If you ever play in a 6 handed game where 5 of the people are straddling, if you chose not to straddle that is your right, but you are absolutely going to be called a nit. There isn’t a private game in the world that would invite a guy like that to their game, and The Big Game is just that, a private, invite only game.” En daarmee lijkt een nieuw bezoek van Robl aan The Big Game zo goed als uitgesloten.
Robl en Tony G weer vriendjes
Tony G besloot in zijn blog (eergisteren) niet tot een nieuwe aanval, maar bood zijn excuses (Tony G style dan wel): “I would like to apologize to Andrew Robl for my behaviour in the recently broadcast Big Game episode. I crossed the line with calling the clock on him. I like the kid and wish him all the best – he’ll thank me in later years for this treatment – he will be a man for it. I still think I had a point about his nittish waiting at a bus stop behaviour – it drove me to distraction – it made me mad!”
Robl beschouwt Tony G als een vriend. Hij noemt hem grappig, bijdehand en extreem intelligent. “But when the cameras come up he Hams it up big time. I don’t mind as it makes for some entertaining TV and most of the time it’s in good fun. With that said he was totally out of line to call the clock on me in the hand vs Daniel. If i remember correctly he called it in under a minute – and with the amount of money at stake I consider it totally out of line.”
Robl slaat terug in blog
Over Negreanu heeft Robl niet zoveel aardigs te zeggen. De verwijten van Negreanu dat hij te lang nadacht over iedere beslissing, doet Robl af als ‘untrue’. “I personally feel Daniel has a personal vendetta against me and is trying to justify his attacks on me with half true facts and I feel I need to defend myself. Daniel was one of my childhood heros. After the last few years since I met Daniel, I can no longer say I see him as humble and down to earth.”
Niet voor niets staan heel pokeraars graag in de rij om bij Negreanu aan te kunnen schuiven. “The moment he sits down in a game online – at any stakes – the game instantly fills with a 20 person waitlist. More than that pros (both online and live) constantly lick their chops when he is at their table in both tournaments and cash games (I hear the talk).”
Robl is het niet met Negreanu eens dat een straddle goed is voor het spel. “It does create bigger pots – after all the stakes are doubled but it also halves effective stacks – making the game less strategically deep. I am playing my own money, and if I don’t win at poker I can’t pay my bills. I feel that it’s my right when playing sky-high stakes to have ample time to try and make the correct decision.”
Robl besluit met een stevige sneer richting Negreanu: “I understand Daniel not wanting me on the show, when he has to play against players who actually earn their living playing poker – not poker personalities – he is laughably outclassed – and ends up looking quite bad. So, Daniel, since it’s unlikely I’ll be able to earn money playing on the Big Game in the future, please start playing again online. I need to line my pockets somehow.”

Heet van de naald van Negreanu’s blog van afgelopen nacht: “I just got off the phone with Andrew Robl. There has been much discussion about the last episode of The Big Game and how Tony G and I “ganged up” on Robl for being a nit. Let me start by saying I genuinely like Andrew Robl, and I always have. I saw his blog, and I thought he had every right to defend his actions and I don’t mind the shots he took at me, I’m a big boy :-)”
Zand erover dus. “I got off the phone with Andrew and let him know we are cool and we squashed it. He explained to me why he didn’t straddle, and I explained to him how it came off, etc. and we both agreed that we made valid points. So as far as I’m concerned, it’s a dead issue.”

*Straddle: een vrijwillige verdubbeling van de BB vanuit de UTG positie, waardoor je eigenlijk de nieuwe, extra grote BB wordt. Zorgt voor meer actie en grotere potten, maar maakt de stacks de helft minder diep.
