John Juanda won de EPT Barcelona nadat hij een jaar niet pokerde. Wat deedie dan al die tijd? Bizarre weddenschappen afsluiten! Patrik Antoniusondertussen klaagt dat online poker niet meer eerlijk is. Oorzaak: trackingsoftware.
Het zijn twee grootheden uit de pokergeschiedenis, John Juanda en PatrikAntonius. Beiden hebben een Full Tilt historie en spelen al zo lang we onskunnen herinneren mee in de high stakes cashgames op tv. Ze speelden allebeimee in Barcelona, waar zoals we nu wel weten John Juanda het Main Event won voor ruim een miljoen euro.Patrik Antonius cashte (71e, €18.320) en liet in een interview metpokerlistings doorschemeren dat hij de EPT Berlijn of Malta ook wil meepakkenen natuurlijk de Grand Final in Monaco, waar de Fin nog steeds woont. En verderis hij van plan weer de grote live games op te gaan zoeken, dat lukte delaatste tijd wat minder: “The big games I was playing in kind of dried out. In Macau the games moved more andmore into private games and the game in Vegas wasn’t the same anymore, either. Suddenly there was no moregame in London and nothing in Monaco. You know, things just change in ourindustry. So I stepped back and cut down on poker.”
Antonius spendeerde veel tijd met familie en vrienden en is weer topfitgeworden, nadat hij last had van zijn rug, schouders en heupen. Online hoeven we hem niet directmeer te verwachten: “You know, it’s a little sad, but it looks like thetechnology has advanced so much that it’s become a totally different game. Nowadaysplayers use software that gives them so much information and so much data thatit has become more of a game of numbers.I never used any of theseprograms. I‘ve never used technology to get an edge. I’m more of a feel playerwho’s living in the moment.”
Tegen de huidige generatie online slopers wil Antonius het niet meer opnemen: “The players today know what they’re doing. Theyare basing their play on what the software tells them to do so it feels likeyou’re playing against a computer these days. If you don’t use poker software it’s not a fair game anymore. But Istill like to play Mixed Games. I would take my chances against any high-stakesplayer live but online I don’t like my chances anymore, unfortunately.”
Terwijl we Antonius dus meer gaan zien, is dat bij Juanda nog evenafwachten. Hij woont in Tokio en vanaf daar is de pokerwereld een tikkie minder bereikbaar dan vanuit LasVegas. In de nabije toekomst gaat Juanda misschien naar Londen voor een highstakes cashgame -en naar Manila “which is the new hot spot for cashgames. I think that’s where the big cash games are going to be.”
Juanda vertelde ook waaromhij een jaar niet pokerde: In een dronken bui sloot hij met een goede vriendbizarre weddenschappen af en dat liep een tikkie uit de hand: “For example hebet me that I couldn’t do 20 pull-ups – and I mean Marine Corps pull-ups – andhe gave me six months to train for it. We also bet on running five kilometers.And here’s a very interesting one. He bet me he would be faster hopping 50yards on one foot than me running 100 yards normally. He offered me the bet athis Christmas party, saying ‘this is a sucker bet, I’m hustling you,’ but Ithought about it and couldn’t believe he would be faster.”
Verder leerde Juanda Japans voor een weddenschap, wat wel handig uitkwamaangezien hij dat na vier jaar wonen in Japan nog niet had gedaan. En Japans leren doe je niet zomaar even, daar spendeerde de beste man een tijdje 8,5 uur per dag aan.
Juanda wonde meeste sidebets en na het afhandelen daarvan is hij weer aan het pokerengeslagen. Of ie binnenkort weer aanschuift bij een EPT is nog maar de vraag,maar dat Juanda terug is dat moge duidelijk zijn.
