Phil Hellmuth heeft weer eens hoog van de toren geblazen. In een interview met Michael Kaplan van PokerPlayer zei hij beter in hold’em te zijn dan Doyle Brunson, Tom durrrr Dwan, Phil Ivey en Patrik Antonius. In het interview toonde Hellmuth opmerkelijk veel zelfreflectie.
De recordhouder met 11 WSOP bracelets, blijft het raar vinden dat de indruk is ontstaan dat hij niet goed kan pokeren: “I am the leading World Series of Poker bracelet winner, all at Hold’em, and there is an impression out there that I am not good at poker? Huh? That doesn’t even make sense to me.”
The Poker Brat antwoordt bevestigend als hem wordt gevraagd of hij zichzelf ziet als een betere speler dan Brunson, durrrr, Ivey en Antonius. “Yes, in tournaments and cashgames. If i sat down and play those guys right now, will I beat them? I haven’t been practising enough. But I still think that if I played with them every day for a month, I would beat them. Maybe they would beat me for the first two or three days.”
Zin om dat te bewijzen heeft Hellmuth niet, hij zit er het nut niet van in. “Why should I? What do I have to gain? I’ll have nothing to gain but money. Besides, I beat all of the greatest players in the 1990s, every single one. I played tons of poker back then. I put in 50, 60, 70, 80 hours a week. So now I don’t have a desire to play in high stakes side games.”
2008 en 2009 waren slechte jaren voor Phil Hellmuth. Dat geeft hij eerlijk toe: “2009 was my worst year. I didn’t make a World Series final table and I lost money. Over the course of my life that had never happened to me before. In 2007 somewhere, after winning the 11th bracelet, I felt like I blew something. I have a sense that something bad happened to my strategy. In 2008 I fought hard and felt that I was missing something. In 2009…I don’t know what happened.”
De enige reden die Hellmuth kan bedenken, is dat hij sinds 2003 feitelijk parttime pokerspeler was. Daardoor speelde hij te weinig en raakte hij uit z’n ritme. Dit jaar wil Hellmuth weer fulltime gaan pokeren. Zijn twee zoons gaan het huis uit om te studeren en Hellmuth is van plan om de helft van het jaar in Vegas te gaan wonen. Hij woont in Palo Alto, California, in een ruim huis met zwembad en veel luxe. Hij heeft een kok, fulltime assistent en een manager op z’n loonlijst staan.
Hellmuth verwacht in zijn verdere carrière nog 13 bracelets te winnen. Hij voelt zich gemotiveerder dan ooit om weer zijn uiterste best te doen aan de pokertafel. Hij overweegt zelfs zijn gezicht weer te laten zien in de highstakes cashgames. “For the people out there who don’t believe I’m one of the greatest at Texas Hold’em, I think it’s kind of funny. But when they play with me this year, they will understand.”
