Govert Metaal is dé Nederlandse Speler van het Jaar volgens de Global Poker Index en de Hagenees wil dat kunstje in 2016 gaan herhalen. Lex Veldhuis en twee collega Team Pro’s geven beginnende spelers tips om doelstellingen te behalen. En we warmen vast op voor de PCA met Bertrand ‘Elky’ Grospellier.
Metaal op nummer één!
Govert Metaal is volgens de Global Poker Index de beste Nederlandse speler van 2015. Ook in onze eigen Player of the Year-ranking eindigde Metaal op nummer één (meer over onze ranking en het jaar 2015 van Govert Metaal lees je morgen op onze site). Wereldwijd kwam Metaal uit op een fraaie 76e plek op de ranglijst. Dit jaar wil Metaal wéér Player of the Year van Nederland worden en in de top honderd komen wereldwijd. De aftrap van het pokerjaar voor Metaal is op de Bahama’s bij het PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

De Global Poker Index ranking 2015 wereldwijd werd gewonnen door Byron Kaverman. Hij presteerde het beste in de pokertoernooien en hield Anthony Zinno en Steve O’Dwyer net achter zich. Kaverman won in 2015 $3,5 miljoen in live pokertoernooien. Hij won onder meer twee $25K Aria High Rollers, een WSOP bracelet én een €10K High Roller bij de EPT Malta in oktober.
Tips voor beginners van Team Pro’s
Aan het begin van het jaar regent het doorgaans doelstellingen en goede voornemen, zo ook in de pokerwereld. PokerStars vroeg drie Team Pro’s om tips in het bepalen van doelstelling, vooral gericht op de beginnende speler. Mickey ‘mement_mori’ Petersen, Caio ‘Pessagno’ en Lex ‘L. Veldhuis’ Veldhuis gaven antwoord op vijf vragen. Veldhuis heeft het vooral over realistische doelstellingen zetten:
“You have to set attainable goals. If you say I want to make $1,200 this month you are setting yourself up for failure. There is variance in poker and some months you will lose. You could say at the end of the year I want to have moved up two stakes. Set goals that you can actually achieve. When you’ve never studied before don’t put ‘Study 5 hours on Tuesday’. It’s not going to happen. Instead start with 30 minutes. Same with playing. You can’t start playing ten hours a day out of the blue. It requires training. Allow yourself that time. Build it up and if you achieve the goals you set you will get motivated even more.”
Mickey Petersen waarschuwt beginnende spelers voor het spelen van te veel tafels tegelijk:
“Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many tables! A lot of beginning players go backwards about it and overwhelm themselves with more tables than they can make quality decisions at. Playing a lot of tables is great but it usually plateaus your skill level a bit. Focus on making good decisions and self-reflection, and only once you are really comfortable with your game start slowly adding more tables.”

PokerStars Caribbean Adventure komt eraan!
Je las er al even over bij de passage over Govert Metaal, maar eigenlijk wist je het al omdat het januari is natuurlijk! Het PokerStars Caribbean Adventure staat voor de deur en als altijd reist het internationale pokercircus af naar de Bahama’s om heel veel kaartjes te leggen. Van 6 t/m 14 januari staan er meer dan 100 toernooien op het programma in het Atlantis Resort. Bertrand ‘Elky’ Grospellier won het Main Event in 2008 en heeft er ook dit jaar weer zin in:
“The PCA is a very unique poker tournament, for many reasons. It’s the stop with the most PokerStars qualifiers so you will feel like you know or have played with most of the field already online! It also feels more like a poker summer camp because of the location, and the Atlantis is filled with so many poker players at the same time. The PCA is one of the best places to play poker in the world, and in 2016 it will have the biggest schedule in EPT history too.”
In 2009 won Elky nog een High Roller, maar sindsdien zijn de resultaten eigenlijk vrij mager op de Bahama’s. Vorig jaar noteerde hij wel een cash in het Main Event, maar een 104e plek dat schiet natuurlijk niet echt op. Dit jaar gaat Elky dus weer op zoek naar die koffer met goud.
