De World Series of Poker Europe wordt komend jaar gehouden in Parijs. Meer precies, in het Casino Barrière Enghien-les-Bains, het oudste casino van Frankrijk. De WSOPE werd de afgelopen twee jaar in Cannes gehouden en daarvoor in Londen.
Van 11 t/m 24 oktober 2013 strijken de beste pokerspelers ter wereld neer in de Franse hoofdstad Parijs. Daarna kunnen ze mooi doorreizen naar Amsterdam voor de MCOP, maar dat even terzijde. Het Casino Barrière Enghien-les-Bains ligt een kilometer of vijftien van het centrum van Parijs in de voorstad Enghien-les-Bains. Zoals de naam al verraadt ligt het casino aan een groot meer.
Het casino is onlangs gerenoveerd en beschikt nu over een theater met 500 zitplekken, waar bijvoorbeeld de finaletafel van de WSOPE gespeeld kan worden. Verder is er een spa bij en een wellness complex. Het speelprogramma van de WSOPE 2013 is nog niet bekend, maar naar verwachting zijn er minimaal zeven bracelet event en een high roller.
“Part of our vision for WSOP Europe is to mix poker and pleasure – and introduce players to some of the most exciting destinations in Europe,” sprak WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart. “Barrière’s facilities in Enghien are amazing and there are likely 12 million Parisians all trying to make sure “Phillipe” Hellmuth doesn’t win another bracelet on French soil. With our ideal dates scheduled to avoid conflicts for traveling players, expanded TV coverage and qualifiers planned, we expect to be back in record-setting mode in 2013. It promises to be the most comfortable and conducive set up for poker players in the WSOPE’s seven-year history.”

Shepherding thousands of players into an over-priced resort in a suburb of Paris in October – rather than stay in the warm Mediterranean climate of the Cote d´Azur, within easy reach of San Remo (for the EPT) and in an area where there is a choice of quality hotels and casinos – and excluding many would-be WSOPE qualifiers from attending might not be the only issue for Stewart to deal with.
The area around Enghien-les-Bains is one of the roughest slum areas in Paris, and the volume of cautionary tales that appear on the Internet may well deter many USA poker players from making the trip across the pond. With the potential that players will avoid making the trip to Paris because of the prices and location (and you cannot wear jeans or trainers in the casino complex), the WSOPE could see its worst year since the tournament series began.
