De Franse Autorité de Régulation des Jeux en Ligne (ARJEL) heeft PokerStars een licentie gegeven voor het aanbieden van online poker. PokerStars.fr is een French only uitvoering van PokerStars. De Fransen zullen dus verdwijnen van de internationale PokerStars site. Dat heeft PokerStars vandaag bekendgemaakt.
De licentie aanvraag van de pokersite bij ARJEL was op 19 mei 2010 gedaan. Nu de goedkeuring binnen is, kan PokerStars.fr toernooien en cashgames aan gaan bieden. Dat lijkt al vanaf morgen te gaan gebeuren, als de Franse overheid de voorwaarden voor online poker bekendmaakt. Vooralsnog kan er alleen voor playmoney en in freerolls gespeeld worden op PokerStars.fr. Na Italië (2008) is Frankrijk het tweede land dat een speciaal PokerStars domein krijgt, alleen voor inwoners van het land. Verwacht wordt dat de internationale PokerStarssite de spelersaantallen iets zal zien terugvallen. Bij de meest recente SCOOP was 6% van de spelers wonachtig in Frankrijk.
“Players on PokerStars.fr will have fantastic new opportunities, not only to play online but to win seats to famous international poker events like the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas,” zei Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier. “These tournaments require players to have the right mix of skill, training and concentration, and PokerStars.fr will be the perfect place for players to work on that.”
Het success van Franse spelers als ‘Elky’, Arnaud Mattern en Thomas Bichon heeft de populariteit van poker in Frankrijk een enorme boost gegeven. “PokerStars.fr aims to be one of the leading online poker operators from the day the French market opens, offering players the best tournaments, promotions and opportunities to win seats at PokerStars world renowned international tournaments,” sprak PokerStars French Country Manager Alexandre Balkany.
